SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb 23, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Xilinx Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX) today announced it has been named a finalist in the 20th Annual EDN Innovation Awards in three categories. The company's global, multi-disciplinary silicon design team has been named Innovator of the Year finalist for its flagship Virtex-6(R) and Spartan(R)-6 FPGA families in recognition for innovation in product design and technical leadership. And, the Xilinx ISE(R) Design Suite, Virtex-6 HXT and Spartan-6 LXT products have been named Innovation of the Year finalists for unique, state-of-the-art electronics in Design Frameworks and FPGAs.

Between now and March 19, EDN Magazine's worldwide audience of engineers and engineering managers are invited to cast online ballots for the winners in each category (20th Annual EDN Innovation Award Online Ballot). A combination of ballots cast by readers, EDN's editorial advisory board and editorial staff will determine the ultimate winners for announcement at an awards ceremony on April 26 at the Silicon Valley Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, California. Winning design teams and products will be featured in EDN Magazine's print and online editions on May 13.

"We're honored to be included among such a deserving list of finalists in this year's prestigious industry competition in three categories," said Victor Peng, senior vice president of the programmable platforms development group. "Through multiple generations of silicon, software and IP development, technology innovation has been a hallmark of our company. Today's news is a testament to hundreds of engineers across eight Xilinx sites worldwide who remain dedicated to delivering the benefits of programmability to a broader base of engineers with each new generation of FPGA platforms."

For most design teams, bringing a single IC to market on the latest silicon process is a monumental achievement. In 2009, Xilinx engineers took this challenge to the next level, simultaneously rolling out two flagship FPGA families - Virtex-6 and Spartan-6 - on the latest 40 and 45nm process technologies, exploiting the benefits of Moore's Law with up to 12 layers of metal interconnect and 2.5 billion transistors. Through a combination of advanced silicon technology, innovative circuit design techniques and architectural enhancements, the design team set new industry benchmarks, offering up to 25 percent higher performance, 65 percent lower power consumption and 2X higher logic density, compared with previous generations, and achieving over 1Tbps bandwidth. And, both families offer low-power device options for power-sensitive applications.

ISE Design Suite 11 pioneers new ground for delivering sophisticated FPGA design technologies to a user community that is extraordinarily diverse with four domain-specific design configurations: the Logic Edition, DSP Edition, Embedded Edition, and System Edition. Each Edition incorporates comprehensive domain-specific methodology in a powerful, yet easy to use, tool flow that combines intellectual property to enable designers to focus their efforts on creating value-added, competitively differentiated product applications.
